Smart Cards and Speech Technology

He stated that the Simputer’s value proposition had shifted from being inexpensive (this has been difficult to achieve) to being able to support smart cards and localized speech solutions for the developing world.
It is my opinion that smart card support is easy and speech technology is hard. Some references below.

Festival. Open source speech synthesis toolkit from the Centre for Speech Technology Research at the University of Edinburgh.
Rhetorical Systems. One of the better commercial speech synthesis products available. They have a cool interactive online demo here.
Nuance. One of the leading vendors in the field of speech recognition is located in Menlo Park. http://www.nuance.com.
