Linux vs Windows Viruses and OS Patches

Emma has been running around installing the most recent XP security patches. I noticed my personal PC has done close to fifty OS patches since March.
It lead met to wonder how many Linux patches have there been in the last year?
Red Hat lists over fifty security advisories since March for Linux 9 and over eighty advisories for Linux 7.1 since last October.
The Openwall project has released five copies of its secure Linux kernel, Owl, since last October.
It appears to me, no matter what OS you choose; anticipate doing security upgrades on a monthly or quarterly basis.
